Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, was born in 599 BCE in Bihar on the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month to Maharaja Siddhartha and Maharani Trishala of Lichchivi dynasty. The name of Lord Mahavir's childhood was Vardhaman. After his birth, the state was progressing quadrupled day and night. Due to which he was named Vardhaman. The festival of Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated by Jain followers all over the world. According to Jain texts, Lord Mahavira was born 188 years after the 23rd Tirthankara Parshvanath ji attained nirvana (salvation). Ahimsa Paramo Dharma: That is, non-violence is paramount from all religions. He gave this message to the whole world and guided the world. The second principle is truth, Lord Mahavira says, O man! You consider truth as the true element. One who lives in wise truth, swims and transcends death. People should always speak the truth.
The third principle is Asteya, those who follow Asteya do not accept things according to their mind, they live in moderation and only take what is given to them.
The fourth principle is celibacy, this principle requires the Jains to demonstrate the virtues of purity; Due to which they do not participate in erotic activities.
The fifth last principle is aparigraha, this education combines all the previous principles. By following Aparigraha, the consciousness of the Jains awakens and they renounce the objects of worldly and enjoyment.
Mahavir Jayanti festival activities
Followers of Jainism take part in many such activities which allow them to connect with their family members and remember Lord Mahavira. On this day people wash Mahavirji's idol with water and fragrant oils. It is a symbol of Mahavira's purity. It also serves the practical purposes of washing beautiful religious idols that are regularly worshiped. The procession of the statue of Lord Mahavir is carried out by the Jains.
